I placed another document beside the deed.<\/p>\n

\u201cProperty taxes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

\u201cRenovation invoices.\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery dollar came from me.\u201d<\/p>\n

She stared at the papers.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut Daniel bought this house.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

I shook my head.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaniel lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat isn’t the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her hands began trembling.<\/p>\n

Then I pulled out one final document.<\/p>\n

The one Daniel had hidden for years.<\/p>\n

A handwritten agreement between him and his mother.<\/p>\n

It stated that she had promised to pay for half of the property.<\/p>\n

She never did.<\/p>\n

Instead, Daniel had been paying everything himself.<\/p>\n

And after our divorce, she suddenly decided the house belonged to her.<\/p>\n

She had no legal claim to it.<\/p>\n

Daniel looked at his mother.<\/p>\n

The room went silent.<\/p>\n

Then Mrs. Mercedes looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cI found out during the divorce.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThen why didn’t you say anything?\u201d<\/p>\n

I closed the folder.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you weren’t entitled to an explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at the suitcases beside her.<\/p>\n

For the first time, they seemed much heavier.<\/p>\n

Daniel walked toward the door.<\/p>\n

She stared at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou’re choosing her?\u201d<\/p>\n

He shook his head.<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe’s choosing herself.\u201d<\/p>\n

His mother picked up her designer bag.<\/p>\n

Her voice was suddenly much quieter.<\/p>\n

Daniel didn’t answer.<\/p>\n

Neither did I.<\/p>\n

She walked toward the door.<\/p>\n

Then stopped.<\/p>\n

I looked at her.<\/p>\n

She left.<\/p>\n

Daniel remained standing in the kitchen.<\/p>\n

He looked at me.<\/p>\n
