I reclined my seat hard.<\/p>\n
The woman behind me immediately slammed her hand against the back of my chair.<\/p>\n
“Seriously?” she snapped.<\/p>\n
I turned around.<\/p>\n
She was visibly pregnant and looked exhausted.<\/p>\n
“Could you move your seat up?” she asked. “I barely have any room.”<\/p>\n
I had boarded late after a miserable week and all I wanted was to sleep during the flight.<\/p>\n
“I paid for this seat,” I replied. “I’m using it.”<\/p>\n
Her face tightened.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later she leaned forward again.<\/p>\n
“The pregnant woman behind me yelled, ‘I can’t breathe!'”<\/p>\n
Several passengers looked over.<\/p>\n
Embarrassed and irritated, I shot back,<\/p>\n
“Then fly first class!”<\/p>\n
The cabin went silent.<\/p>\n
The woman stared at me.<\/p>\n
Then she looked away and didn’t say another word.<\/p>\n
For the rest of the flight, I felt justified.<\/p>\n
People complain about everything these days, I thought.<\/p>\n
When we landed, I grabbed my bag and hurried toward the exit.<\/p>\n
That’s when a flight attendant approached me.<\/p>\n
“Sir, could I speak with you for a moment?”<\/p>\n
Her voice was calm but serious.<\/p>\n
I followed her to the side of the jet bridge.<\/p>\n
She looked at me carefully.<\/p>\n
“Sir, there’s something you should know about the passenger sitting behind you.”<\/p>\n
My confidence faded.<\/p>\n
“What?”<\/p>\n
The attendant took a breath.<\/p>\n
“She wasn’t traveling for vacation.”<\/p>\n
I said nothing.<\/p>\n
“She was flying to see her husband.”<\/p>\n
I frowned.<\/p>\n
“Okay…”<\/p>\n
The attendant continued.<\/p>\n
“He’s in intensive care.”<\/p>\n
My stomach dropped.<\/p>\n
“The doctors aren’t sure he’ll survive the week.”<\/p>\n
Suddenly the argument replayed in my mind.<\/p>\n
The tired eyes.<\/p>\n
The trembling voice.<\/p>\n
The way she’d stopped talking afterward.<\/p>\n
The attendant wasn’t finished.<\/p>\n
“She spent most of the flight crying quietly.”<\/p>\n
I felt sick.<\/p>\n
“Why are you telling me this?”<\/p>\n
The attendant handed me something.<\/p>\n
A folded napkin.<\/p>\n
“I found this after she left.”<\/p>\n
I unfolded it.<\/p>\n
Written in shaky handwriting were the words:<\/p>\n
\nPlease hold on until I get there.<\/p>\n
I love you.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
There was a small stain where tears had blurred the ink.<\/p>\n
For a long moment I couldn’t speak.<\/p>\n
The flight attendant gently said,<\/p>\n
“Everyone is carrying something you can’t see.”<\/p>\n
Then she walked away.<\/p>\n
I stood there staring at the note.<\/p>\n
The woman had never asked for luxury.<\/p>\n
She had never demanded special treatment.<\/p>\n
She had simply needed a little kindness.<\/p>\n
And I had given her none.<\/p>\n
For weeks afterward, I couldn’t stop thinking about it.<\/p>\n
Eventually I contacted the airline and asked if they could pass along a message if possible.<\/p>\n
I wrote:<\/p>\n

I judged you without knowing your story.<\/p>\n

I never knew whether she received it.<\/p>\n

The worst part wasn’t reclining my seat.<\/p>\n
It wasn’t the argument.<\/p>\n
It was assuming I knew what someone else was going through.<\/p>\n
Because sometimes the person testing your patience is fighting a battle far bigger than the inconvenience in front of you.<\/p>\n
