\u201cFor sixteen years, this woman has been the person who kept this company from collapsing.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room became completely silent.<\/p>\n

He explained that when I first joined the company, it was struggling badly. I had worked nights, negotiated contracts, rescued failing projects, and eventually built the division into the company’s most profitable department.<\/p>\n

Then he revealed something Roy had never known.<\/p>\n

\u201cThree years ago, the board offered her the position of Chief Operating Officer.\u201d<\/p>\n

I heard people gasp.<\/p>\n

\u201cI turned it down,\u201d I said quietly.<\/p>\n

Roy stared at me.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n

I looked at him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause you told me you wanted me home more.\u201d<\/p>\n

His face changed.<\/p>\n

Mr. Carter continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd tonight, she isn’t simply retiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

He handed me an envelope.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe’s becoming a major shareholder in the company.\u201d<\/p>\n

The room erupted in applause.<\/p>\n

Roy looked stunned.<\/p>\n

But Mr. Carter wasn’t finished.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor years, Roy has told people that his wife was lucky to have him. He apparently forgot that this company has been paying her a salary large enough to support most of the lifestyle he enjoyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Someone in the audience laughed.<\/p>\n

Roy’s face turned red.<\/p>\n

I opened the envelope.<\/p>\n

Inside was the final paperwork transferring my shares into my name alone.<\/p>\n

Then Mr. Carter said something that made the entire room go quiet again.<\/p>\n

He had announced our divorce hoping to humiliate me.<\/p>\n

Instead, he had given me an audience for the truth.<\/p>\n

I picked up my retirement gift, thanked my coworkers, and walked out of the party alone.<\/p>\n

For the first time in eighteen years, I wasn’t someone’s wife.<\/p>\n
