The glass was the first thing my daughter noticed.<\/p>\n

She was only one year old, so she didn’t understand why her father was sitting on the other side of it.<\/p>\n

She only knew that the man behind the glass looked familiar.<\/p>\n

I had seen her every week in photographs.<\/p>\n

But photographs don’t prepare you for the moment your child looks directly into your eyes for the first time.<\/p>\n

My wife sat across from me with our daughter in her arms.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s Daddy,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

My daughter stared at me.<\/p>\n

I smiled through the tears already running down my face.<\/p>\n

I wanted to pick her up.<\/p>\n

Kiss her forehead.<\/p>\n

Feel her little fingers wrapped around mine.<\/p>\n

But there was a sheet of glass between us.<\/p>\n

And there was nothing I could do about it.<\/p>\n

Then the guard behind me looked at his watch.<\/p>\n

My heart sank.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlready?\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded.<\/p>\n

I turned back toward my daughter.<\/p>\n

She was still reaching for me.<\/p>\n

My wife whispered,<\/p>\n

\u201cTell her goodbye.\u201d<\/p>\n

I couldn’t.<\/p>\n

I couldn’t say that word.<\/p>\n

So instead, I smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cDaddy will see you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

My daughter didn’t understand.<\/p>\n

She just kept reaching.<\/p>\n

Then the guard walked toward me.<\/p>\n

I stood up.<\/p>\n

My daughter immediately started crying.<\/p>\n

My wife tried to calm her.<\/p>\n

But she kept looking at me.<\/p>\n

Then something happened that I will never forget.<\/p>\n

She reached toward me and said:<\/p>\n

I froze.<\/p>\n

My wife covered her mouth.<\/p>\n
