They said the fish was probably lying on the ground and we had used camera tricks to make it look enormous. But my husband and I knew exactly what happened. It started early one Saturday morning. We had driven deep into the mountains, where the river runs cold and clear between the hills. My husband had been fishing there since he was a boy. He knew every bend in the river, every quiet pool, and every place where the biggest fish liked to hide. That morning, he disappeared around a bend carrying his fishing rod. Twenty minutes later, I heard him shouting. “Come here! Quickly!” I thought he’d fallen. Instead, I found him standing knee-deep in the river, fighting something that was pulling his fishing line so hard that the rod was almost bending in half. “What is it?” I shouted. “I don’t know!” Then the water exploded. A gigantic fish surfaced. I had never seen anything remotely like it. My husband fought it for nearly an hour before finally getting it close enough for us to pull toward the bank. We couldn’t believe its size. It was so large that we couldn’t lift it. So we dragged a heavy wooden table from a nearby picnic area and carefully pulled the fish onto it. My husband was exhausted. I was laughing and crying at the same time. We took photographs from every angle. Then I noticed something strange. The fish was still moving. “It’s alive,” I whispered. My husband looked at me. “So?” “So we can’t leave it here.” We poured river water over it while we figured out what to do. Eventually, a local wildlife officer arrived after someone had called about the enormous catch. He stared at the fish for several seconds without saying anything. Then he looked at us. “Where exactly did you catch this?” My husband pointed toward the river. The officer’s expression changed. “You need to understand something.” He crouched beside the fish. “This species hasn’t been documented in this part of the river for decades.” We thought we were in trouble. Instead, the officer called his supervisor. Then his supervisor called someone else. Within hours, several people had arrived. They measured the fish. They photographed it. They took samples from the water. And eventually they told us something we never expected. The fish wasn’t simply unusually large. It was extremely old. Possibly more than a century. The river had been isolated for generations, allowing a small population of enormous fish to survive where nobody had been looking. The authorities eventually transported the fish to a protected section of the river. We never got to keep our incredible catch. But we didn’t care. A few weeks later, our photograph appeared in a local newspaper. The headline read: “Mountain Couple Discovers Giant River Fish.” People who had laughed at us suddenly wanted to know where we’d found it. We never told them. My husband still goes fishing there. But these days, whenever he sees something enormous moving beneath the surface, he simply smiles, reels in his line, and leaves it alone. Because some things are better caught by a camera than by a fishing hook.
